3 Best Spanish Movie Recoms For Intermediate Learners In 2026

Written by:

These are my 3 favourite movies in spanish that I’ve enjoyed as an intermediate spanish learner.Using forms of media like music , film , tv shows , literature , podcasts , ect makes learning spanish more fun. Fun habits that invoke pleasure and feel like play stick more quicker and longer than boring habits.

Picture this : Anna learns natural spanish with her favourite songs , literature , podcasts and films. Anna enjoys her langauge learning journey. John takes a different approach he pays for traditional , structured spanish classes , , buries his head into spanish grammar textbooks and listens to boring , repetive audio mpf about describing the weather in spanish.

After a year , Anna has learnt a bunch of natural spanish and is conversational. She is eager learn more spanish and whenever she speaks with natives , they are impressed by her fluency and native like langauge. In contrast, after a year John learns a lot of words but at times his spanish sounds robotic , unatural and boring. John views learning spanish as a chore and natives feel like talking to John is a chore as well.

Should I Use English Captions When Watching A Film In Spanish?

I only recommmend using english subtitles if you are an absolute beginner or still relatively new in spanish like a month of learning or less.Using english captions will provide context so beginners will know what’s happening but the beginner’s brain will prioritise reading the english subtitles. On the side , however the beginner is getting more accustomed to the spanish accent , sounds and may spot out frequently used words / expressions just from exposure.

However , since this post is geared towards intermediate spanish learners , I highly recommend using spanish subtitles while watching a film in spanish. Initally , it will take too much mental energy figuring out what characters are saying in spanish dialogue but eventually you will start finding words/expressions you have learned that are used in stimulated but realistic scenes. This helps reinforce word recognition and seeing both the spoken and written word / phrase simultaneously allows you to connect the two.

I will give rough plot summaries ,so you don’t get any spoilers! 😉

Amores Perros

A film that intertwines in the lives of 3 different individuals. The three individuals are a young teenage boy , an attractive , famous , young woman and a old , homeless man. Dogs are a recurring symbol in this film and depict the mental state of characters. Love manifests in different ways ; the good , the bad and the ugly.

Y Tu Mama Tambien

Two mexican adolescents conivnce an older , spainard lady to a journey to an imaginary beach. This film is a known fav by avid letterboxd users. I love reading the IMBD trivia on Y Tu Mama Tambien. Notable quirks are this movies doesn’t use any music besides radio or stereo , 90% of this film was recorded in natural lighting and that the ending scene was the first scene filmed.

Diarios de motocicleta

Young argentine , medical student Ernesto “Che” Guevara and his best friend biochemist Alberto Granado leave Argentina with little money to travel by motorcycle and foot through Chile , Peru and Venezuela.Beautiful scenary of nature in this film will leave you in awe.Income inequality and indeginous mistreatment leaves Enersto and Alberto angry and triggers the anger and desperate need for change of Eneresto “Che” for him later in life to follow his revolutionary , rebellious destiny.
